Join RU Green and RU Serve this Wednesday, April 19, at 3:30 p.m. for tree planting, in celebration of Earth Day. The tree planting will take place at the waterfall behind the Dobbs Science Building and Hill Freeman Library. RU Green will provide the the gloves and tools.
The Tree Planting for Earth Day at Reinhardt has been happening for a few decades.
“The Earth Day Tree Planting at Reinhardt has been a wonderful tradition on our campus dating back to when I was a student at Reinhardt in the mid-1990s,” RU Green Program Coordinator, Zach White, stated.
This year, RU Green and RU Serve are working together to sponsor the Earth Day Tree Planting. A “Hearts of Gold” Redbud Tree will be planted this year. White said the tree has beautiful lavender flowers in the spring and the leaves are a Reinhardt gold in mid-spring.
In additon to the planting of the Redbud tree, two Snowball Viburnum Bushes are planned to be planted. These bushes were rooted from Snowball Viburnum Bushes that were planted on Reinhardt’s campus by former Reinhardt College President Dr. Rowland Burgess. These bushes get their name from their appearance — big white flowers that are as big as a snowball.
Since the start of Reinhardt’s tree planting for Earth Day, many trees have been planted on campus. Earth Day trees include plaques with their common names, scientific names, family names and countries of origin.
Earth Day is this Saturday, April 22, but Reinhardt students are welcome to celebrate Earth Day a few days early by planting a tree on campus with RU Green and RU Serve.
