The Student Activities Council is putting on an Eagle Cinema event, which will be a showing of the movie Loving, this Saturday, Feb. 11. The movie will be shown at the Bannister Glasshouse in the Student Life Center at 9 p.m. Popcorn and tissues will be provided.
“Loving is about an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, who fell in love and married in 1958,” Coordinator of Programming and Service at the Office of Student Activities, Meredith Keating said. “They grew up in Central Point, a small town in Virginia that was more integrated than surrounding areas in the American South. Yet, it was the state of Virginia, where they were making their home and starting a family, that first jailed and then banished them. Richard and Mildred then relocate with their children to the inner city of Washington, D.C., but the family ultimately tries to find a way back to Virginia.”
Keating believes that the move night will provide a great time for all.
“Attending a Student Activities Council Eagle Cinema event is a great, low pressure way to meet new people,” said Keating. “It’s also really comfy to curl up in one of the Glasshouse chairs and watch a movie on a blow-up screen.”
Sophomore psychology/English major and event leader, Ally Vieira, also encourages students to come out and join the fun.
“It’s a great interracial love story that really accentuates what we are trying to remember during Black History Month and a big part of what Americans fought for,” said Vieira. “Plus, there will be tons of movie theater popcorn to go around, so come to the Glasshouse and enjoy!”
