The Reinhardt University Theatre Program will perform “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” as its final theatrical performance of the semester.

The theatre program kicked off the 2016-2017 school year with a performance of Blithe Spirit at the Historic Canton Theater from Sept. 30-Oct. 2. On Halloween evening, students directed and performed Dr. Faustus on campus in the Donor Plaza.

Sweeney Todd, to be performed Nov. 18-20 at the Falany Performing Arts Center, features a score by the renowned Stephen Sondheim and tells the tale of a wrongfully exiled barber returning to London in order to exact his revenge upon the judge who framed him. Upon meeting the owner of a failing pie shop, Sweeney opens a new shop over hers. Together they begin adding a special ingredient to her meat pies, one resulting from Sweeney’s blood lust.

Showtimes are Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $12.50 (student tickets are free). Tickets can be purchased by calling the FPAC box office at  (770) 720-9167 or visiting Reinhardt.tix.com.

“I’m very excited to perform Sweeney Todd, and I think everyone else is too. There’s still a few things we need to work out but we’ll have them ready by Friday,” Junior Cameron Smith, a Sweeney understudy, said.

Members of the Reinhardt community are equally excited about the upcoming performance.

“I’m super pumped for Sweeney Todd! I’ve been a fan of the musical for years now, so it’s exciting to have the chance to see it live. Plus, I just enjoy seeing the musicals that the theatre program puts on every semester. I haven’t missed one in two years,” said Rachel Riley, who works in the Gordy Dining Center.

The performance is directed by Reinhardt Theatre Program Coordinator Dave Nisbet, and Professor Brian Osborne is the Musical Director.
