Group exercises classes offered to help RU stay fit

The Reinhardt University Athletic Trainers Office is collaborating with the G. Cecil Pruett Community Center YMCA to offer a variety of exercise classes to the Reinhardt community. These classes, led by a certified group exercise instructor, focus on aerobic activity, toning or mind/body connection.

Group Exercise is free to the Reinhardt Community, and sessions are available to all levels of exercisers. To participate, a properly completed release form is required.

Group Exercise was started to promote a healthy, active lifestyle among the Reinhardt community members. Participants will learn safe and effective exercises, how to identify their personal limits, the benefits of exercise and how to balance life, work, school and leisure time.

“Group Exercise is a great opportunity to keep the Reinhardt community healthy,” said Dr. Walter May, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Student Activities. “We want to teach the students about lifelong fitness and remind them that you don’t have to be an athlete to exercise.”

The program began in the late 2000s and has grown steadily. By the spring of 2016, 318 students were participating in a total of 58 classes.

Irene Smith, the Program Coordinator for Group Exercise, believes that everyone should attend at least one class to try it out and experience the benefits. She explained, “Whether you’re just getting into an exercise routine or have been a fitness enthusiast for years, group exercise classes are a great way to ratchet your fitness level up a notch. And with all the different options available these days, and at Reinhardt, there’s a group exercise class for every fitness level and every interest … You’ll get a great workout and improve your health while having fun doing something you love!”

The following classes are currently offered:

  • Circuit Training, led by Reinhardt University’s Athletic Training Office, is offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. – noon in the gym Fitness Center.
  • Ultimate Abs, led by certified instructors from the YMCA, is offered on Mondays 5:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. in room 214 of the gym.
  • Tabata Bootcamp, led by certified instructors from the YMCA, is offered on Tuesdays 5:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. in room 214 of the gym.
  • Yoga classes, led by certified instructors from the YMCA, is offered on Wednesdays 5:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. in room 214 of the gym.
